A week of events celebrating our amazing and precious heathlands.

 

2024 is the 4th year we’ve teamed up with partners and colleagues to bring you a series of fun things to do, to engage and educate about our heathland and its wildlife.

Heath Week Events

Scope Sightings

  • Monday 29th July 10am to 12pm
  • Ham Common Nature Reserve
  • FREE

Join the BCP Poole Heathland rangers to see what you can spot through the telescope!

They will be on hand to answer any questions you have about the Dorset heathlands.

 

What’s in the Moth Trap?

  • Tuesday 30th July 8:30am to 10:30am
  • Canford Heath
  • FREE

Join the BCP Poole Heathland rangers as they open up the moths traps that were left out overnight.

Meet at the crossroads near the Steeple Close entrance:

Knoll Beach Heath Activities

  • Tuesday 30th July 10am to 2pm
  • Knoll Beach, opposite the café
  • FREE

A pop-up event with The Dorset Heaths Partnership and the National Trust. Follow the wildlife trail and get involved with heathland activities.

Suitable for all ages.

Meet the Rangers and Wildlife Walk

  • Tuesday 30th July 12:30pm to 3pm
  • Turbary Common Nature Reserve
  • FREE

Come and meet the BCP rangers on the main green off of Turbary Park Avenue from 12.30pm-2pm. They will also be leading a guided wildlife walk leaving the green at 2pm.

Community Wildlife Adventure Day

  • Wednesday 31st July 10am-4pm
  • Upton Country Park 
  • FREE

A day of nature fun with our Education Team as well as our partners Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB and the Butterfly Conservation Society.

We will be taking the day to record as many of the plants and animals in the Country Park as we can. You will be able to have a go at pond dipping, minibeast hunts, guided bird walks, wildlife trails, making bee homes, and lots more! Come and find us in the Walled Garden.

Come and meet the BCP Poole Heathland rangers to find out about your local heaths and do some colouring!

Litter Pick for a Prize

  • Thursday 1st August 10am-12pm
  • Canford Heath 
  • FREE

Come and help to keep the heath litter free and win a prize! 

We’ll provide the bin bags and litter pickers, and together we can help to keep this special area clean.

Guided Walk with ARC

  • Friday 2nd August 9am – 12pm
  • Great Ovens Nature Reserve
  • FREE

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust are leading a guided walk around Great Ovens Nature Reserve.

Come along to learn all about our natural heritage and try to spot some native amphibians and reptiles!

Booking is essential as places are limited so be sure to get your ticket here.

Meet at Lawson’s Clump car park and dress for the weather!

 

Heathland Trail

Complete the fun heathland trail for your chance to win a prize!

Meet the Moths 

  • Friday 2nd August 10am – 12pm
  • Hengistbury Head
  • FREE

Come and meet the moths at Hengistbury Head! Moth experts will be on hand to help you identify moths and tell you lots of interesting facts.

Suitable for all ages, no need to book.

Knighton Reserve Walk

  • Saturday 3rd August 
  • 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm
  • Silverlake
  • FREE

Join James the ecologist as he takes you on a guided tour of the Knighton Reserve, including some areas of the site which are usually exclusively for Silverlake guests. Get involved with plant and bug IDing with magnifying observer pots, reptile refugia checks and bird watching. 

There are two sessions available and booking is essential as spaces are limited. Book by emailing James directly.
