Canford Heath set alight again

May 23, 2022

Unfortunately, Canford Heath was the scene of another devastating heath fire yesterday afternoon. Thanks to the swift action of Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was brought under control and extinguished after two hours. Although it wasn’t as big as the fire on the 25th of April, 7500 square metres of heathland were still destroyed and countless birds, reptiles and insects were killed.

Although green shoots will start to come through in a matter of weeks, it will still take up to 25 years for this area of the heath to be suitable for some of our heathland plants and animals – assuming that it doesn’t get burnt again before then.

Many thanks must go out to all the amazing volunteers who came out at very short notice to search the heath for survivors of the fire. Unfortunately, no survivors were found only dead reptiles, birds and caterpillars.

Please be extra vigilant on the heath when you are out and about. No barbecues or fires of any kind are allowed, and cigarettes should be disposed of carefully. If you spot anything suspicious, please report it to the police on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If you spot a fire, please report it to 999 and give as much detail as you can.
